5A Identifying Local Opportunities

The goal of this activity is to go through local newspapers and other news mediums to find people who have problems that can be solved.  

American Airlines cancels 2,000 flights out of Florida ahead of Irma[1]

Summary: Due to Hurricane Irma, American Airlines have been canceling flights that were projected to arrive and depart from Miami International Airport as well as airports in Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, and Orlando. They are waiving fees if customers want to change flights due to Irma.
Problem: Airline flights are being cancelled due to impending dangerous weather patterns as Hurricane Irma approaches.
Who Has It:                 
·      Airline Companies (not only American Airlines) will have to reimburse flyers for their tickets and provide free flight accommodations, which will negatively affect their bottom line.
·      Flyers who were supposed to travel on those flights are now prevented from freely traveling, which might force them to stay in Florida when they planned on evacuating.
·      Hotels are burdened with an increase in grounded flyers staying at their locations and need to find accommodations for agitated citizens.

          

White nationalist requests new date to speak at UF[2]

Summary: Despite multiple attempts and denials due to issues of security and safety, alt-right white nationalist Richard Spencer, whose talk at University of Virginia led to a protestor’s death, plans to speak on campus on October 19th. 
Problem: Some people fervently want Richard Spencer to talk and agree with his ideology and others passionately oppose his rhetoric.
Who Has It:
·      University of Florida caries the burden of allaying aggressive, hostile protestors from both sides who might endanger others, which was seen at the University of Virginia.
·      Richard Spencer and his team’s efforts of expressing their opinions to the public are being thwarted by the University’s previous denial and current reluctance.
·      Protestors are in danger of getting hurt if the demonstration turns violent.
·      Police and safety personal will be on call to maintain security, likely putting themselves in danger’s way to do so.



F.D.A. Accuses EpiPen Maker of Failing to Investigate Malfunctions[3]

Summary: F.D.A. is investigating Pfizer, the drug company that produces the EpiPen. They have been receiving complaints from users of malfunctions in the product that might be connected to a lack of regulation on a manufacturer of a crucial component of the EpiPen. Pfizer spokespeople defend their product and deny the connection, despite recent recalls of the product with the specific malfunction associated with the upper mentioned manufacturer.
Problem: EpiPen are being correctly administered due to malfunctions or a lack of training on the user’s part.
Who Has It:
·      Pfizer is being charged with bad PR from social media as well as investigations done by the F.D.A. Recalling malfunctioning EpiPen will also cause affect revenue.
·      EpiPen user are concerned about the dependency of the product as well as might die from an ineffective EpiPen.
·      The F.D.A. needs personal and information to investigate and invest time into this case.



DACA Uncertainty Causes Fear for Undocumented Students[4]


Summary: With nearly 790,000 under its protection the program DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was ended by President Trump Tuesday, September 5th, which has brought distress to Dreamers who attend the University of Florida.
Problem: The repeal of DACA leaves nearly 790,000 Dreamers without legal protection to stay in the United States.
Who Has It:
·      Dreamers are now in danger of being sent back to the country their family illegally brought them from.
·      Universities will encounter a brain drain of talented students if Dreamers are deported.
·      Immigration Lawyers like the ACLU are feverishly working to defend Dreamers and try to find a way to allow them to stay in the U.S.
·      The U.S. Government Treasury will need to effectively allocate limited funds to a potential increase in demand for Deportation Personal as well as bureaucrats who will be employed to sort through nearly 790,000 Dreamer files.
·      The families of Dreamers will be negatively affected by the potential removal of Dreamers, especially Dreamers’ children who will be displaced.



They Thought the Monsoons Were Calm. Then Came the Deadly Floods. [5]

Summary: Northern India has experience one of the worst monsoon seasons, with more than 1,200 casualties and counting. This is yearly occurrence with an average life toll of 2,000 people
Problem: Yearly monsoons floods large areas of India and South Asian, displacing large population and even killing others.
Who Has It:
·      Environmentalist are concerned that the patterns of aggressive weather patterns around the world foreshadow escalating, uncontrollable weather.
·      Poor regions are especially affected by natural disasters since they lack the infrastructure for safety staying inside as well as evacuating the region before and after the floods struck.
·      The Indian government is lacking a cohesive crises strategy that will be able to manage the casualties and losses of this yearly natural disaster. Additionally, this is a huge economic burden, especially due to the compensation given to the family of the deceased.
·      Farmers and farm workers lose all their work when the flood hits, continuing the cyclic poverty in the region.

    I find it interesting to see how we both found articles discussing how climate is increasing in a negative way and how it causes disruption to how we operate in daily society. It's also interesting to see how society is changing and how certain progresses seem to be falling backwards as we have a rise of more traditional as well as the more concerning close minded groups rising up and gaining power and recognition. In the end hopefully the future will turn out bright but at the moment we most seek out to solve the problem in order to secure a bright future.

    I found your articles to be very informative. The article about the FDA not investigating EpiPen malfunctions was especially interesting. My niece has to carry an EpiPen and this article made me think about her and if something were to malfunction with one of her pens. That is scary to think that the FDA hasn't checked into this problem, we trust that they are doing what they are supposed to be doing but I know sometimes things get over looked.

    Your story on national disasters was very disheartening to hear as most of the western world remains oblivious to the plight of others. I heard about the DACA problem as well. I agree that these students are an important part of our country, and sending them away is an unnecessary evil. I think the U.S. using funds to deport innocent children would be shameful as a country.

    Natural Disasters can have a serious impact not only on infrastructure, but also transportation affects can be widespread and detrimental to business, tourism, and distribution of supplies, goods, and services. When American Airlines cancelled their flights, this impact has affects over a week in some cases. This impacts local business and even government officials in some cases. If people can not travel many services cease to be performed.

30A – Final Reflection

1)     Read through your posts from this semester. Recall all of the experiences you've had a long the way -- the highs, the lows -- the fun moments, and the moments of drudgery, and even the moments of dread. It was incredibly nerve-racking to have to interview people and get feedback for my product. That was something that was very dreadful. Here's the pitch! Reflection I took the advice to explain more about how I would reach my customers. The positive feedback was surprising. There wasn't any advice that wasn't poignant or silly.
