16A What's Your Secret Sauce?

1) Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique. What is it about you, exactly, that makes you different? Write this up in a detailed list.
1)    I Use Difficult Situation as Motivation to Work Harder
a.     Whenever I have a rough day, I allow myself to feel sad for a little while, but then I find a way to use that situation as an experience that I can bounce off and find experience, a lesson to learn, or a story to tell in the future.
2)    I Commit
a.    Whether it’s doing homework, performing a task at work, or having fun with friends, I always commit and invest my energy into a project. I don’t like to dabble and do a lot of things. If I am going to do something, I am going to do it well and to completion.
3)    I Have a Lot of Energy
a.     When hanging out with my friends, they have pointed out that I have a lot of energy. Instead of walking down the road, I skip sometimes because I need to let out some of the energy.
4)    I Go Out of My Way to Find Things to Improve
a.     I don’t like to settle, so when there is a problem that is really nagging me, such as ineffective organization of an organization, I work hard to learn about the issues, why they exist, and how I can fix them.
5)    I’m a Good Listener
a.     Whenever I have a conversation with people, I frequently find joy in asking the other person questions and learning what they know and how they think. At the end of conversations, they feel better that someone listened to them and they could get what was on their chest off, and I can help someone and learn more about them.

2) Interview the five people who know you the best. Ask them what they think makes you different -- remember, focus on your knowledge, skills, abilities, emotions -- in other words, your human capital. Try to stay away from discussing your other types of capital (such as who you know). Record each interview. In your post, please post each interview, as well as a two-three sentence summary of each interview, explaining what your key takeaways are.
Rachel
Conclusion: Rachel appreciates my personality and how approachable I am. She emphasizes my outgoing personality and sociability.

Reeya
Conclusion: Reeya noticed how much energy I have, which is something a lot of people say about me. Something that she said that no one else did was how she noticed that I stick to my decision, which was interesting and an observation that no one else made.

MICHELLE
Conclusion: Michelle noticed that I try to relate to people and am passionate about what I do. Since we are roommates, we spend a lot of time talking, and something that comes with that territory, which she noted, was my ability to relate and understand she personality and accepting it.

DANIELLE
Conclusion: Danielle and I talk a lot about our careers and  how we are working towards our goals. That is why she notices and values the drive I have to grow professionally and pursue my dreams.

EMMA
Conclusion: Emma valued my ability to listen, which was something that is rarely noticed but that I noted in my give unique traits, which I thought was very observant of her. She probably has a unique skill of complementing people well, but this was a very touching response.

3) Reflect on the differences. How do you see yourself, and how do others see you? Are there differences in how you assess yourself compared to others? What do you think causes these differences? Do you think your interviewees are correct about you? Finally, going back to your list from part 1, would you make any corrections to the list? How?

REFLECTION
What my friends and I said about me are relatively similar. Since my friends and I frequently tell each what makes the other special, I feel like my initial answers were probably affected by what they have told me in the past, making them similar but just in different words. They didn't emphasize how I compartmentalize, but noted more how friendly I am and how I'm easy to talk to. After interviewing my friends, I still wouldn't change anything I find unique about myself because these traits are important to me.

  1. Hi Emily! I have read pretty much every blog post you have made so far this semester and I can see all of these traits in your writing, which is really cool! I admire how you are so full of life and not afraid to be yourself. You take your energy and channel it to pursue your dreams as well as being a good friend and listing to others. All of these traits that your friends mentioned are very much applicable to the hospitality industry and they will serve you well!

  2. It's good to hear that your friends consider you a driven person as I believe that this is a vital skill to have in order to achieve in today's society. Being an energetic person on top of that is also very useful as I believe it goes hand in hand with having that drive to really accomplish your goals. The fact that you have commitment on top of that is very important because while I believe that I am also pretty driven I can sometimes lack the commitment needed to truly get things done right.

  3. Emily,
I truly enjoy reading all of your blog posts as you are "my normal" that I typically comment on. Your personality and energy really stand out, not only to yourself and to your friends but also through this blog. Just through the title of your blog I can really see how much energy and personality you have. I have also been able to tell how committed you are as you have stuck with your goals and your ideas when it comes to the unmet opportunity you identified. I think it is interesting to point out how you think your friends thoughts might have affected what you believe makes you unique as I had not thought about it like that.

  4. Emily,
The qualities you see in yourself make you a great asset to any team or company. Your friends really understand you and the characteristics that make you different from other people. Of course your friends and family always know you the best but it was very evident from their interviews that they agree with you. But the fact that you embrace these qualities will help you continue your path to success.
